Entry 18 · Communication

I don’t want affection to replace conversation

Being loving is important. So is being able to discuss the things that are less cute.

I appreciate affection and thoughtful gestures, but I have learned that they cannot do the job of communication.

If something feels wrong, I would rather have an awkward but respectful conversation than pretend everything is fine because we are otherwise sweet with each other.

Good communication does not mean never disagreeing. It means both people can say what they mean without trying to punish, embarrass or confuse the other person.

The romantic parts of a relationship feel much better to me when that foundation is there.
